Dressmaker customers & commissions

Ten townsfolk bring you their occasions and their tastes, and the game pays you for the dresses you make them. Official sources confirm a great deal about how that relationship works — and nothing at all about who these people are, which is why the characters themselves live on their own page.

How commissions actually arrive

This is the part of the shop the official sources describe in the most detail, because it is the game’s rhythm.

You ring the bell

Customers do not queue outside: you summon the next one by ringing the bell, which is how you pace a working day. The bell became the rule in the first patch after launch.

Some arrive by pigeon

A subset of commissions arrives by pigeon — the achievement Birds of a Feather, Frock Together is earned by completing all of them. How pigeons are triggered is Unconfirmed; when one lands, it is worth prioritising.

Occasions set the brief

Townsfolk want dresses for events on their social calendar and to their own tastes. Published reviews describe workwear, ball gowns, a wedding and a gothic black dress for a funeral among the requests.

Accepted work gets paid

Delivery earns reputation and coin. Since the first patch, a commission the customer accepted pays out even when the dress itself fails — a fix that landed in the players’ favour.

How a dress is judged

Dresses and their parts carry style scores, and each request wants certain categories and scores met — which is why two well-made dresses can get different reactions. The published example of failure is a trim that contradicts the brief: a professional pinstriped dress with a garish pink trim no longer reads as professional. The exact scoring values are not officially published, so treat the brief as direction rather than arithmetic.

Selling to customers you never meet

Not every sale is a commission. Finished dresses can be displayed in the shop window and sold off the rack to whoever walks past — a feature the developers added deliberately so players could design their own dresses to sell, or fund an extra elaborate commission piece. Off-the-rack work is also where experiments belong, because no brief is watching.

The sabotage option

The store description says you can "satisfy (or sabotage!)" townsfolk — the exclamation mark is official. What sabotage does mechanically, and what it costs you, is Unconfirmed: no official source goes further, and the developers’ announcements do not mention it at all.

Where these facts come from

This site is built from three official sources: the Steam store listing, Steam’s global achievement statistics and the developer’s own Steam announcements. Everything they state is quoted or paraphrased with the source cited; anything none of them states — per-fabric stats, hidden achievement conditions, what sabotage changes — is marked Unconfirmed rather than filled in. Nothing here is sourced from community wikis or datamining, and generated illustrations are labelled as such.

Questions

Customer questions

How many customers are in Dressmaker?

Ten named customers: Adora, Alice, Dorothy, Edith, Fiona, Marie, Priya, Prudence, Rose and Vivian. Each has a major-commissions storyline with a matching Steam achievement.

How do I get new customers in Dressmaker?

Ring the bell to summon the next customer — that became the rule in the first post-launch patch. Some commissions also arrive by pigeon.

What do customers like in Dressmaker?

Unconfirmed in detail. The store page says townsfolk commission dresses for important occasions and personal tastes, and style scores decide whether a dress fits the brief — but no official per-customer preference list has been published.

How do I finish a customer storyline?

Complete all of that customer’s major commissions — each storyline has its own achievement, from Go Off, Queen! (Adora) to Good Girl Gone Vlad (Vivian). The story is not branching, so no commission can be locked out by an earlier choice.

Do I get paid if the dress fails?

Yes, if the customer accepted the commission. The first patch after launch fixed failed commissions not paying out, and the patch notes state plainly that if the character accepts the commission, you should be paid.

Who are the customers as characters?

See the characters page: the ten names, the hints in their achievement names, what the developers say about the cast, and the team that made the game.
